Disaster Risk Reduction Training

The Maliwaliw Island folks, Municipality of Salcedo Eastern Samar, received a DRR training as part of their rehabilitation process. The remote island is a beneficiary of the Give2Asia and GDFI comprehensive rehabilitation efforts, which will include permanent housing, livelihood and climate change mitigation.

Lawaan Permanent Shelter

After the long preparation.. finally the Municipality of Lawaan, Fondation de France, PhilDHRRA and GDFI held the ground breaking ceremony for the the construction of 50 units permanent housing in Lawaan Eastern Samar. The project will relocate coastal families that are identified to be indigent and critically susceptible to storm surges. continue

Sharing clothes and school bags

GDFI distributed clothes and school bags for children in Tacloban and Guiuan, in the areas most affected by typhoon Yolanda. We visited the barangays Trinidad and San Pedro on Tubabao Island in Eastern Samar and barangay 27 in Tacloban. The clothes were all donated by the organization Hope 4 Women Intl. . continue

Mangrove clean up

Since the end of March 2014, GDFI is cooperating with OXFAM for a project named ‘Greenworks' which aims to Enhance Natural Regeneration of Mangrove Forest in Eastern Samar. Initial Fish and Crab nets have now been distributed to some fisher folks. Reconstruction of schools, health centers and restoration of livelihood are now the primary objectives of the foundation in the next coming years. continue

GDFI offices and facilities were devastated by the typhoon, staff house, island sanctuary station, dormitory, etc.. thanks to the shelter kits GDFI was able create a temporary solution for its leaking roofs, specially for the environmental training center which currently serves as storage for relief goods. The destruction brought by the typhoon was exceedingly overwhelming, reaching more than 300 km/hr of sustained winds and a diameter of at least 400km, wrecking most of Eastern Visayas and the neighboring regions.
